Job Description

PRESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT WRITER, Resource Development (RD), to oversee ad hoc development correspondence from MIT's president to a portfolio of major donors and prospective donors held by fund-raisers in the Office of Philanthropic Partnerships. Will work in close coordination with fund-raisers, Office of the President, and other Institute officers; draft correspondence for the Institute’s most generous donors; contribute to short- and long-term stewardship strategies for donors; draft meeting follow-up correspondence, special invitations, etc.; work quickly and decisively to craft, write, revise, and produce timely letters, emails, and other development correspondence for the president; use good judgment and understanding of the president’s priorities to determine messaging; work with other RD colleagues to align connection points with donors and friends; proofread and copyedit correspondence; and maintain accurate records in Advance and donor relations files.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, communications, or related discipline; four years’ work experience; two years’ professional writing experience, preferably in development or higher education administration; history of successful experience managing and prioritizing a high volume of deadlines in a fast-paced environment; meticulous attention to detail and accuracy; ability to learn new systems and processes quickly; good analytical, organizational, and research skills; exceptional writing and proofreading skills, proven ability to write in another person’s voice and in-depth understanding of English grammar and usage; experience giving and receiving constructive feedback; ability to gather and determine essential data from a variety of sources; ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in coordination with teammates; self-motivation; discretion with alumni records and other sensitive material; and comfort working with senior staff to ensure timely communication with donors.
