  • Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution required

  • ABA accredited JD preferred

  • 5-10 years’ experience, with 2 or more years’ experience in a leadership position, in an academic library setting.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience developing, coaching and/or supervising staff to promote collaboration and foster continuous improvement

  • Proven ability to lead cross functional teams with and without formal authority, across departments and divisions

  • Ability to motivate an independent and creative team to achieve the larger goals of the organization.

  • Experience working with human resources and budgeting preferred

  • Collection Development experience, including selection and retention decisions is required

  • Naturally curious and motivated, collaborative and willing to take on all tasks.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity

  • Excellent professional judgment, diplomacy, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

Administrative duties include providing support and advice to Library managers on issues related to human resources such as: goal setting, performance review, advancement, professional development, discipline, and union relations. The Associate Director is an active participant in library hiring and works closely with managers and Law School HR staff in the hiring process. With the Executive Director, the Associate Director monitors the administrative budget and makes spending decisions. The Associate Director also advises the Executive Director and Vice Dean generally on the administrative structure of the library and professional development of all library staff members.

The Harvard Law School Library is actively iterating on its excellent patron services, while exploring new programs and services. The Associate Director assists with planning short-term and long-term library programs and initiatives, including evaluation and assessment. In addition, the Associate Director coordinates Law Library committees, serving on several committees ex officio.


The Associate Director has general responsibility for the oversight of collection development, digital strategy and the historical & special collections units of the library. This includes director supervision of the managers in these departments. Additionally, and in collaboration with the collection development team, the Associate Director selects material and oversees the evolution of the law library’s collections in print and digital formats.


The Associate Director may also assume teaching, service, scholarship and other administrative responsibilities and is encouraged to participate in local, regional, and national professional organizations. The Associate Director represents the library on Law School and University Library committees and may represent the Executive Director or Vice Dean at meetings or events. The Associate Director assumes overall responsibility for the Law Library in the absence of the Executive Director.


  • Directs the daily activities of the library administrative staff.

  • Advises managers on issues related to the Law School’s HR policies and procedures.

  • Assists with strategic planning and implementation.

  • Monitors the library’s operational spending and budgeting.

  • With library managers, develops, plans, and implements library programming and initiatives.

  • Provides leadership for the Law School’s collection development efforts.

  • In collaboration with collection development team, oversees the drafting, refining, updating, and publishing of the Collection Development policy.

  • Oversees the work of the collection development team, which selects all materials for the Library’s collection in all languages and parts of the world.

  • Responsible for selection in specific jurisdictions.

  • Works closely with other leaders at Harvard and partner schools on collection development to enhance collaboration and reduce redundancy where possible.

  • Plays a leadership role in the Law Library community broadly with respect to new, transparent, shared approaches to collection development.

  • Direct supervision of the managers of Collection Development for both US and FCIL material; manager of Historical and Special Collections; and the manager of Digital Strategies and Collection.

  • Serves on Law Library, Law School and Harvard Library committees as assigned
