About the Microfinance Working CEO Working Group:

The Microfinance CEO Working Group is a collaborative effort by the CEOs of ten leading global microfinance organizations whose impact is felt in 86 countries on five continents, and whose products and services are designed to offer support and opportunity to millions of low-income people around the world. Its members include Accion, Aga Khan Agency for Microfiance, BRAC, CARE USA’s Access Africa, FINCA, Grameen Foundation, Opportunity International, Pro Mujer, VisionFund International, and Women’s World Banking. Since 2011, the Working Group has worked to support the positive evolution of the microfinance industry. The Working Group is committed to ensuring that the microfinance industry reaches its full potential by advocating for, and implementing, responsible business practices that keep clients at the forefront. Its agenda is both industry-facing, working with participants in microfinance, and outward-facing, addressing the broader community, especially those who support, influence and set the environment for the industry. The Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion presently houses the secretariat for the Microfinance CEO Working Group.


The Microfinance CEO Working Group seeks a candidate with superior writing skills, an interest in public relations, and a passion for international development and social investment to fill our Communications & Media Relations Internship. This position is ideal for a student of Communications or Marketing interested in contributing actively to the creative and strategic development of an influential network’s marketing and communications campaign. Applicants for this position should be media-savvy and have strong communications skills and demonstrated creativity. This candidate will work directly with the Program Manager and other members of our staff to collaborate and contribute to an ongoing creative process, provide feedback, and contribute to the development of new strategies and materials. The schedule of weekly working hours will be determined in advance by the intern and staff; the intern will remain in contact with staff during their remote working hours via Gchat and/or Skype.

Key Responsibilities may include:

  • Working on website content development

  • Monitor media coverage of microfinance and financial inclusion globally, managing the update of the monthly microfinance media heat map

  • Interfacing with the Microfinance Communications Council, comprising communications professionals from each of the Working Group member organizations, on broad campaign initiatives

  • Develop watch list of journalists covering MF positively and negatively in US and UK media

  • Research major US newspapers for culture

  • Drafting press releases and other communications collateral

  • Work on the organizing and managing events (both virtual and in-person)

  • Create content for and monitor our social media Twitter and LinkedIn pages to generate awareness and interact with industry stakeholders

  • Draft content for blog, e-newsletter, other media outreach and investor collateral relevant to the responsible microfinance, financial inclusion, and social performance

  • Contribute to messaging and branding strategy by researching marketing trends for target markets

  • Research key events and developments in microfinance, international development, and other issues relevant to the organization; assist with positioning CEOs and their organizations as it relates to the Working Group’s key strategic priorities

  • Complete other administrative tasks and special projects for the MCWG as needed


  • Willing to report to college/university for academic credit

  • Recommendations available upon satisfactory completion of internship

  • Engagement with staff within the 10 network organizations

  • Ongoing feedback to develop professional etiquette

  • There may be one or two travel opportunities, depending on the duration of the internship

  • Masters student preferred

  • Superior writing ability & independent research skills

  • Creativity encouraged! Video editing, Photoshop, etc. skills a plus

  • Coursework or direct work experience in creating marketing or outreach materials preferred

  • Prior experience planning events either virtual or in-person

  • Ability to multi-task

  • Organized and detail-oriented

  • Ability to work as a team member and independently

  • Creativity and comfort in an innovative role desired

  • Familiarity and comfort with using social media on behalf of a company preferred

  • Prior understanding of microfinance is desirable; however, we are willing to teach interns about microfinance if they can express their desire to enter this field

  • Computer literacy necessary; some experience in web content management preferred

  • Experience with Hootsuite or similar systems is helpful

  • Fluency in Excel, WordPress, and experience with Adobe Creative Suite (CS6) are a plus

  • Ability to travel to an office location downtown Chicago or Boston 1-2 days a week (time on-site, in the office, to be determined with selected candidate)
