Establish and lead the role of Program Leader, External R&D Innovation, for the Rare DiseaseResearch Unit. Responsibilities include all R&D stage programs in Rare Disease, Idea through POC/Phase 2 with an emphasis on late preclinical to Phase 2-stage. The ideal candidate will thrive on the opportunity to initiate and lead innovative programs working in a dynamic environment applying a highly externalized and virtual approach. The candidate will also demonstrate knowledge in rare disease development strategies.External R&D Innovation is a mechanism to connect Pfizer with leading external scientists andBiotech CSOs that will be run by a high profile Research Unit working closely with key internal R&D experts and in partnership with Pfizer Business Development. The goal is to create and draw on global innovative external opportunities in both the biotech and academic space to strengthen Pfizer's R&D pipeline via strategic integration of select opportunities ensuring continued leadership in both small and large molecules.This position will be key in providing a competitive advantage to Pfizer by applying industry leading scientific expertise to finding and integrating the best external opportunities for the RareDisease Research Unit. This position will provide a competitive advantage to Pfizer in the areasof gene manipulating therapeutics including exon skipping, gene therapy, gene editing etc.
Incumbent will need to apply industry-leading scientific expertise to support the build-up and delivery to the Pfizer R&D portfolio via the global scouting, assessment and integration of outstanding external pre-clinical and clinical opportunities into the Rare Disease Research Unit pipeline. The goal is to enhance the Pfizer R&D pipeline via integrating products with a clear strategic fit to the Rare Disease Research Unit within Pfizer's R&D portfolio.Define and implement the strategy for the ERDI function supporting the Pfizer product pipeline for the Rare Disease Research Unit. This includes the definition of Rare Disease Research Unit specific priorities for the integration of external products, programs, or technologies in coordination with respective Business functions (including Research, Clinical, Commercial, andWWBD) and based on a thorough assessment of Pfizer Rare Disease Research Unit's product pipeline, technology opportunities, and strategic fit. * Provide ERDI support to the Rare Disease Research Unit, including effective scouting, high quality assessment, and strategic integration of opportunities, by self and by utilizing Pfizer and/or external network (e.g., regional scouting). Specific focus area will be determined via annual gap analysis, but will include activities within the field of novel targets, approaches and pre-POC for orphan and genetic diseases.Duties include:Proactive Outreach: Responsibility for the build-up and utilization of research, medical, and industry networks to target innovative opportunities in the field of rare diseases in both industry and academia around the world (self and through Pfizer organization). Outstanding and proactive networking with external partners as well as key Pfizer partner lines on a global level, including (active) participation at scientific meetings and conferences as well as academic, biotech, or VC interactions. Travel required.Information on opportunities to be processed (e.g., deposited in a database) and screened for strategic fit and relevance (requiring continuous interactions on scientific and business strategies with key stake holders, e.g., Rare Disease Research Unit, other Pfizer Research Units, Clinical, Commercial, Legal, Business development, Project Management, etc.)Provide feedback to and follow up with external partners (e.g.., decline, request/discuss further information) while keeping partner lines informed and/or involved as appropriateCoordinate and assist in review of information received on external opportunities including partner lines as appropriateEnsure high and consistent quality of documentation and presentation regarding external opportunities to Senior Management (up to CEO) for decision makingProvide scientific expertise to Unit as member of the Rare Disease Research Unit senior leadership team, and effectively link to partner lines, such as other R&D units, Business Development, or Legal as necessary for any aspects related to external opportunitiesIncumbent will have additional responsibilities on an 'as needed basis', including but not limited to: consolidate the R&D perspective on post Proof-of-Concept and Regional Licensing or Merger/Acquisition opportunities for Rare Disease-related activities with Pfizer partner lines.Provide scientific/clinical expertise to relevant Pfizer business functions (including, but not limited to, Research, Clinical, Commercial, Business Development, Project Management, Legal)Accountable for operational excellence, including consistency and transparency of all processes among partner lines with the goal to build consensus support for opportunities and ensure high and consistent quality of documentation and presentation to Senior Management (uto ELT, Board, CEO) for decision making. This includes i) the provision of scientific/clinical expertise and education as necessary to key partner lines within Pfizer (including, but not limited to Research, Clinical, Commercial, Business Development, Project Management, Legal), ii) tracking of progress/impact of funded research, and iii) regular updates of the group's progress.Pro-actively contribute in rendering Pfizer the preferred partner of choice within Academia and*Biotech and represent Pfizer to external partners and maintain a professional environment during the initial contact as well as continued discussions and negotiations. Represent Pfizer at conferences as well as scientific and other business-related meetings as required (including presentations).
PhD in life sciences or MD degreeMinimum of 10 years research experience in academia or biotechnology/pharmaceutical industryMinimum 3 years industry experience.Technical Skills:Experienced in leading Biotech or Pharma R&D function and thorough understanding of the entire R&D drug development process; current on market trends and cutting edge developments in the industryExperienced in scientific exchange with bench scientists and senior level management of external companiesDrug sourcing experience consisting of extensive business knowledge and relevant collaboration/licensing/acquisition experienceExpertise in rare disease development strategiesExperience in gene manipulating therapeutic methods including exon skipping, gene therapy, gene editing etc.
