Sanofi Group Director R&D Communications in Cambridge, Massachusetts

The Director, R&D Communications for North America, is responsible for the strategic development and execution of internal and external communications for Sanofi’s Research and Development function and executives in North America. The role serves as the primary communication business partner to the Head of the North America R&D Hub and his or her leadership team. This role is accountable for developing and implementing strategic, effective and integrated communications plans to support and drive business goals. The main objective for this role is to increase the internal and external profile of R&D in North America.

One of the primary activities for the Director, NA R&D Communications, is to create a comprehensive executive communication platform to increase the awareness and effectiveness of the North America R&D leadership team. This platform will help employees and other stakeholders understand the valuable contribution that R&D and Sanofi’s R&D scientists make to the future of Sanofi. Additionally, it will support the commercial business units’ efforts to publicize their long-term strategic outlook through innovative scientific discoveries and developments in key areas. Finally, the platform will help raise the profile of R&D in transversal internal and external communication efforts as executed by other members of the NA Communication team including on behalf of the U.S. Country Council.

The leader in this role will work with R&D senior leadership as well as Communications colleagues to build strategic communications including employee engagement, leadership communications, stakeholder management, media outreach, digital presence (including social media and the R&D intranet), and corporate reputation focused on the development and evolution of the company’s R&D pipeline.

  • Build proactive communications programs in cooperation with the business by acting as a strategic partner; be prepared for unforeseen issues/crises

  • Act as the Communications Business Partner to the Head of NA R&D Hub

  • Working in a matrixed environment to develop solid working relationships and coordinating with Global R&D Communications, NA Internal Communications, Global Corporate Media Relations, External Affairs, Investor Relations, and other partners to identify and promote story opportunities and other collaborations.

  • Supporting, designing and implementing external communications plans to build a more positive reputation/image for NA R&D

  • Acting as a key contact to continue partnering with PhRMA to increase Sanofi’s visibility and enhance our Image and Reputation.

  • Anticipating, preparing for and collaborating on media issues

  • Working with business crisis teams, provide effective crisis management and communications support

  • Collaborate with Global Media Relations to identify proactive media and speaking opportunities to support the executive committee and business priorities

  • Ensuring close coordination and consistent strategic R&D communications through internal vehicles to ensure employee awareness and understanding of external news and Sanofi position/perspective

  • Overseeing the strategic direction, execution and results of outside communications agencies

  • Collaborate as a member of the North America Communications team to align communications and offer best-in-class practices in support of One Sanofi and corporate communications goals.

  • Member of the NA Communications Leadership Team; North America R&D Leadership Teams; and Global R&D Communications Leadership Team


Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Communications, Business Administration, Journalism or related area is minimally required.

Minimum10 years of experience in a leadership role in Communications or Corporate Communications in pharmaceuticals/biotech or with a healthcare public relations agency serving leading clients.


  • Strong business acumen skills, ability to think strategically, in a creative and innovative manner

  • Ability to assimilate strategic information and convert it into clear and concise messages that colleagues and external stakeholders can understand.

  • Strong R&D and pharmaceuticals background

  • Ability to counsel and interface successfully with senior executives, communications peers and colleagues across functions and business units.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to craft a message and convey the importance of that message to a targeted audience.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, matrix environment and to demonstrate flexibility, outstanding organizational skills and positive attitude.

  • Excellent networking and relationship-building skills and the ability to interact with confidence with various levels and functions

  • Experience in internal and external communications

  • Ability to collaborate in a heavy matrix environment
