Duties & Responsibilities Exhibition Design:• Ensures exhibition design is consistent with the museums’ design identity, architecture, and established guidelines for installation methods and materials.• Partners with curatorial and other staff to develop creative and effective design solutions for installation of art.• Leads design development process including organization and facilitation of design meetings and brainstorming sessions. • Fosters collaborative relationships among key stakeholders, including Curatorial, Academic & Public Programming, Conservation, Collections Management, Facilities, Security, Visitor Services, Graphic Design and others.• Provides design assistance for changes in collections galleries, art in public spaces and all campus installations, and temporary exhibitions.• Produces plans for case design and construction, gallery layout, color palette, and lighting for all exhibitions and installations, with special consideration for the installation challenges unique to each project, including lender or conservation requirements, security, construction specifications, access, A/V and technical needs.• Deploys tools and innovative technologies, including creation of architectural drawings, elevations, renderings, maquettes and other techniques to visualize design concepts for project staff.• Manages staff of exhibition professionals who install artwork throughout the museums’ buildings and campus locations.• Establishes design, installation and budget scope with Director’s Office, Curatorial and Conservation for all exhibitions and gallery changes. Informs Director of Collections Management of all associated costs and provides regular updates.• Collaborates with Exhibition Production Manager, curatorial and conservation staff on gallery design and display needs specific to each installation and work of art.• Works closely with graphic design staff on development and integration of labels and other interpretive materials to ensure design consistency.• Oversees and monitors development, tracking and implementation of installation schedules. • Works collaboratively with museum staff on innovative approaches to imbedding digital components into installations.• Develops digital drawings and working methodology that illustrate the installed collection galleries in support of the Collection Gallery Installation program.Project Management:• Functions as an essential part of the Collections Management Division leadership team. Develops and implements policy and procedures that reflect current trends in the field while adjusting to changes in the departments with which they work most closely.• Develops and communicates the global work plan for exhibition installation.• Gathers and assesses budget information for exhibition design to ensure milestones are met within budget and timeline.• Oversees external vendors as needed, ensuring quality and consistency of exhibition design guidelines and museum identity for each project.• Serves as hub for exhibition information and synchronizes work between departments. • Communicates regularly with departments on development of exhibition design, object lists, installation needs and requirements.• Advises Director of Collections Management on integration, workload and timing of exhibition projects. • Responsible for creation of a project management system for all exhibitions and related gallery changes including policy and procedures. • Identifies and implements digital applications to assist in project tracking, recording and communicating progress of exhibition development. • Effectively communicates museums’ exhibition design aesthetic to faculty, students and other external constituents.

Basic Qualifications Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role.Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 7 years of exhibition design experience.

Additional Qualifications Master’s Degree preferred. Experience managing staff. Demonstrated ability to develop and manage complex projects and design development. Proficiency with state-of-the-art imaging tools deployed for design, as well as, Microsoft Office, Google SketchUp, Photoshop tools and Mac platforms. Design samples required with application. Experience working in a university museum a plus.Knowledge of art history and familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Vectorworks, Renderworks, building plans, symbols and terminology preferred. Experience with Basecamp and The Museum System (TMS) tools a plus. Demonstrated knowledge of installation and construction techniques, building codes, and electrical requirements, as well as experience with automated dimmable LED lighting. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, budget oversight, project management, management and leadership skills. Ability and willingness to stay abreast of emerging design technologies. Ability to seamlessly blend digital and non-digital experiences in a physical space. Art handling experience welcome.

Additional Information Design samples required with application.Reporting to the Director of Collections Management and working in close collaboration with a number of constituents, in alignment with the prescribed design protocols in the newly renovated and expanded Harvard Art Museums, the Assistant Director of Exhibitions will develop and implement engaging exhibition design solutions in support of the curatorial vision for each exhibition. Designed by Renzo Piano, the Harvard Art Museums contain approximately 43,000 square feet of exhibition space that include collection galleries, temporary exhibition spaces and public art areas. This new position presents a unique opportunity for the successful and creative candidate to execute design solutions and develop a design process for the future of the Museums’ exhibition program.
