Liberty Mutual Benefits (LMB) is a new and exciting business within Commercial Insurance that will grow rapidly over the next few years. Specifically, LMB aspires to be the fastest growing Accident & Health (A&H) carrier in the US market. This includes high growth products such as Critical Illness and Accident insurance as well as new products designed to meet emerging customer needs. Within LMB Product Management, the A&H team is responsible for developing products, capabilities, pricing and Underwriting (UW) support to drive rapid but profitable growth.

The A&H team is looking for an individual to join the UW and Development team as a Director, Product Research. This individual will drive initiatives that will build A&H product capabilities across our Individual Consumer and Employer segments. He/she will work closely with LMB Distribution and U.S. Consumer Markets (USCM) to remove obstacles to A&H sales and may include product education, marketing and opportunity analysis. This person will also manage a pipeline of technology projects aimed to improve our A&H capabilities. Other components of this role include competitive intel research, presentation development/delivery and management of special projects.

This position reports into the reports to the head of Underwriting & Development. This individual has extensive interactions with the rest of the A&H team as well as LMB Distribution, USCM, CI Marketing, Information Technology and LMB Ideas.

  • Responsibilities *

  • Manages initiatives in conjunction with Distribution and UW to drive profitable sales of our Individual / Consumer A&H products

  • Organizes and communicates feedback from LMB Distribution, USCM and other partners to our A&H teams. We will use this feedback to improve product, capabilities, pricing, and risk selection

  • Prioritizes capability / technology initiatives by developing business cases and success metrics. Serves as the sponsor and subject matter expert for IT projects that improve the A&H offering

  • Develops relationships with vendors to fill capability gaps as needed

  • Partners with CI Marketing and LMB Product Development to develop marketing materials that effectively position A&H products to consumers and producers

  • Drives special projects and presentations (e.g. for planning, executive readouts, etc.)

  • Manages the collection and synthesis of market and competitor intelligence. Oversees intelligence sharing with partners and uses this intelligence to identify/fill gaps in our A&H offering


  • Bachelor’s Degree required; master’s degree (e.g. MBA) preferred

  • Deep knowledge of A&H products is preferred but not necessary. Familiarity with consumer financial or insurance products is desirable

  • Demonstrated track record of working across functions and departments to harness diverse views to get critical projects completed

  • At least 5 to 7 years of related work experience with progressively increasing responsibilities

  • Knowledge of various functions of an insurance organization including claims, underwriting, distribution and finance

  • Experience managing projects and stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to exert influence and drive decision marking at the senior manager / executive level

  • Track record for building effective relationships with both internal and external business partners

  • Proven leadership strengths and the ability to develop others. Prior management experience preferred

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Experience presenting to and facilitating discussion with senior managers

  • Excellent analytic, quantitative and problem solving skills
