As part of the nation’s central bank, the Boston Fed shares responsibility for carrying out the Federal Reserve’s dual mandate – to promote price stability and maximize employment. The Research Department plays a key role in carrying out this mission by conducting original, empirical research, briefing the Bank President on our findings in preparation for his participation in FOMC deliberations and other monetary and economic policy discussions, providing analysis to our Board of Directors in support of their primary credit rate recommendations to the Board of Governors, and conducting periodic interviews with regional businesses to collect anecdotal information for the Beige Book. We also aim to influence public policy decisions by participating in academic debates at conferences and through other scholarly outlets such as peer-reviewed journals. Our staff of economists, policy and data analysts, research assistants, computing technicians, editors, librarians, archivists, and administrative specialists work together to achieve these goals.
This position is responsible for the preservation and physical and electronic accessibility of archival holdings. The position reports to the Director of the Information Center. Responsibilities include collecting, organizing and maintaining control over a wide range of information deemed important for permanent safekeeping. The incumbent is also responsible for raising awareness and educating staff about our historical collection and ensuring materials are available through online services.
Principal Accountabilities: • Acquire and preserve important documents and other valuable items for permanent storage or display. • Plan and oversee the arrangement, cataloguing and exhibition of the collection. • Manage collection policy for introduction and implementation to Bank staff. • Promote the value and usage of the bank’s historical collection. • Maintain records in accordance with accepted standards and practices that ensure the long-term preservation and easy retrieval of the documents. • Catalog items/collection in online database. • Identify preservation needs and series that might be digitized. • Consult and/or advise other departments on archives issues. • Assist in outreach efforts; assisting researchers and planning and executing exhibits to inform staff of the Bank’s history. • Handle reference and research questions. • Maintain/enhance Historical Collections website as needed. • Conduct oral histories of current and former staff. • Work collaboratively with other Federal Reserve System archivists.
Knowledge and Experience: Knowledge and experience normally acquired through, or equivalent to, the completion of a Master’s degree in history or Library Science from an ALA accredited program with formal course work on training in Archives Management. A minimum of 3 years of job related experience in appraising, and describing archival materials.
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills; demonstrated organization and planning skills; familiarity and experience with archival description standards; knowledge of preservation and conservation standards for archival materials required. Proven ability to research and present educational exhibits on a regular basis. Must be able to perform physical activity associated with Archives work environments. Project management and supervisory experience a plus.
