Purpose of role

The Assistant Vice President, Strategy & Innovation (AVP) is a senior and influential position responsible for providing in-depth advice and support related to the development and execution of Foresters strategy, including innovation. The role will serve as a trusted advisor to the Strategic Business Units (SBUs), assisting in strategic planning, pursuing innovation, and supporting the strategic alignment across SBUs. The global S&I function was recently established and the AVP will play a critical role in its development. The incumbent is also responsible for collaborating with colleagues in supporting:

  • Development and maintenance of a strategic plan, including the various aspects of the planning process;

  • Strategic analysis and development of SBU strategies, including innovation opportunities;

  • Advancement of the innovation strategy, program and culture across the enterprise;

  • Development of thought leadership to provide insights and support decision-making;

  • Production of reports and dashboards;

  • Communication and collaboration across the enterprise on S&I priorities; and

  • Ongoing development of the S&I function.

Key responsibilities/accountabilities

Partner with business leadership in strategic decision-making and execution:

  • Collaborate across the enterprise on sourcing, developing and executing innovation opportunities, including managing a portfolio of innovation projects and other strategic initiatives

  • Produce research and analysis to support decision-making processes

  • Provide an independent perspective and consultative advice in a collaborative manner

  • Lead or support special projects as assigned, working in conjunction with key leadership stakeholders

Collaborate with leadership in developing and maintaining a multi-year strategic plan:

  • Understand and analyze marketplace dynamics, developments and trends, assessing their relevance and implications to Foresters strategy

  • Support the planning of and participate in strategic planning meetings

  • Partner across the organization to develop the enterprise strategic plan

Support the development and administration of the S&I function:

  • Produce reports and dashboards on S&I activities and priorities

  • Develop internal and external communications in support of the S&I communications plan

  • Design and run innovation challenges and contests and other employee engagement activities

  • Support the advancement of Foresters presence in the external innovation community

  • Administer departmental partnerships, subscriptions and tools

Target experience and background:

  • Strong academic credentials; preferably an MBA from a ranked institution

  • At least 8 years professional experience, with strong preference for experience relating to these areas:

  • Strategy consulting

  • US, Canada, UK insurance and asset management

  • Product development

  • Corporate innovation/R&D

  • Startups

  • Experience navigating a large, geographically disbursed organization

  • Experience managing cross-functional projects

  • Proven track record of successfully managing multiple priorities in a fluid environment while maintaining a high level of professionalism

What you need to know

  • Requires travel 25-50%, including internationally (US, UK and Canada)
