Job Purpose: The role of Off Price Buyer at The Paper Store is to plan, purchase, and monitor pricing, merchandising and marketing for assigned lines of business as required while maximizing sales and profits. He/she will take ownership of a category and is accountable for the department’s overall growth and profitability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a competitive merchandise assortment plan that is customer focused

  • Analyze sales reports and economic conditions to anticipate consumer buying patterns and effectively forecast company sales and inventory levels

  • Maintain budgeted profit margins and open-to-buys

  • Integrate brand sourcing, marketing, and retail supply chain functions into the merchandising process to make smart business decisions

  • Keep strong pulse on market conditions to maximize advantageous pricing and resources

  • Identify new opportunities in the pursuit of new vendors and sourcing new markets

  • Proactively assess merchandise mix in attempt to continuously improve assortment

  • Utilize effective negotiation tactics to ensure favorable deal outcomes while maintaining positive vendor relationships

  • Skillfully negotiate with vendors on pricing, content of assortment, and terms

  • Up to date competitor knowledge within both off price and full price markets

  • Identify items for promotional and marketing strategies and determine lifecycle of each item

  • Collaborate with marketing to manage promotional activities and events

  • Work with E-commerce team to ensure all available products are on the website and merchandised properly

  • Coordinate products for new store openings and remodels and monitor store performance for adjustments post-opening as needed

  • Work with stores and Distribution Center to answer questions, identify and resolve issues

  • Initiate and follow up on transfers, consolidations and recalls with stores and Distribution Center

  • Available to travel and work at tradeshows, visit and work in stores and in warehouse if necessary

  • Train, coach and develop assistant buyers and/or administrative assistants

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Significant experience in a buying role

  • Sound analytical and problem solving skills

  • Strong ability in Microsoft Excel and database applications including building spreadsheets ad hoc and creating macros

  • Extremely detail oriented and willing to analyze down to the lowest level

  • Ability to work closely with a diverse group of people

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
